This summer, I have been spending a lot of time running heavy equipment here on the preserve. It gives me a lot of time to think and reflect as I have seen many of my projects evolve and endure the test of time. It dawned on me one day the common thread that tied all of my projects together was “Sustainable Harvest”, NOT “Over Harvest” or “No Harvest” and not Rigid unyielding management. Everything revolves around long term, managed use of land, water, timber and wildlife.
“Sustainable Harvest” is not just a catchy buzz word, or a politically correct label! To me, it has become a way of life and when done correctly, you can sustain and maintain a healthy herd or crop indefinitely. If you control your base and you control your harvest, you will never run out of big timber – you will never run out of big Bass or Catfish. You will never run out of big Bucks, Bulls or Boar. You have to have limits and always keep your eye to the future, and with good common sense.
A Sustainable Harvest of renewable resources is one of the greatest things in the world. I really enjoy watching these things evolve over time and sharing the results with my clients. I think all Hunters and Sportsmen practice and support Sustainable Harvest whenever they can. And like myself, they become a more experienced and appreciative participant as time goes along.
